The 35th annual Henties Bay angling bonanza - hosted by Swakopmund’s Penguin Angling Club (PAC) - took place at the Henties Bay Golf Estate parking area yesterday.

The heaviest fish was Willem Linde's (26) 15.705 kg kabeljou. He landed it at Paaltjies. It was also the first fish to be weighed on Monday for the competition and signalled an impressive start to the angling bonanza.

When it hung as the leading fish on the leaderboard, it remained in the top position until Linde’s kabeljou was hailed this year’s ‘bonanza’ fish, earning the angler N$40 000.

The categories included the bonanza fish (heaviest fish overall), the heaviest barbel, the top three kabeljou, top three steenbras, top three dassie and top three galjoen.

The winner of the kabeljou category went to Joe Herman (junior) with his 8.415 kg kabeljou caught at Pale. The top three kabeljous' combined weight was 23.495 kg, and together with the bonanza kabeljou, the combined weight was 39.2 kg.

The winning steenbras went to W. Theron with his 7.615 kg catch. He landed it at Mile 78. The combined weight of the top three steenbras’ was 16.455 kg. The winning kabeljou went to Paul Willemse with his 2.155 kg fish reeled in at Mile 68. The winning dassie went to M. Dames with his 1.595 kg catch. He landed it at Rooi Tou. Joe Herman (senior) reeled in the only barbel weighed in at 0.585 kg and won the category. He landed it at Pale.

Linde told Erongo24/7 that he was lucky to land the winning kabeljou. “We were at Paaltjies busy catching small kabeljou when - to my surprise - a big kabeljou bit on my hook. I was very lucky,” he said, adding that he landed the 15.705 kg fish at around 9:00.

Henties Bay mayor Lewies Vermaak highlighted that the bonanza is a “very good” economic booster for the coastal town.

"The bonanza attracts a lot of people to our town. Everybody knows about it because it is a big event which is hosted on a yearly basis."

He further cautioned holidaymakers to be vigilant, especially during the festive season. “Please be safe and watch over your own things. There are some people walking around looking for an opportunity to grab whatever they can. So, please look after yourselves and do not drink and drive,” he said.

PAC chairperson and event organiser Allan Langenstrassen said the annual angling bonanza attracts quite a number of anglers and holidaymakers to the Namibian coastline, more specifically to the town of Henties Bay. "We hope to keep the competition going for the next couple of years. We are going to try and increase the big prize by N$10 000 every year and hopefully like in the old days, we can put a car down to attract even more anglers."
