The mayor of Usakos, Irene Simeon, recently hosted a business consultative meeting with various Walvis Bay business stakeholders and investors.

She shared the vision, mission, challenges, and efforts to modernize and create employment in the town.

In her presentation, Simeon highlighted Usakos’s potential to become a pivotal point for imports and exports, facilitated by well-developed warehousing services acting as a dry port linking the coast to inland regions.

She also emphasized the historical railway station’s opportunity for further development into a dry port. Additionally, she noted the town’s ample land for expansion and its excellent and affordable living environment, making it a peaceful and safe haven.

Simeon identified strategic priorities under the banners of infrastructure, equipment, and service delivery.

“We want to maintain and enhance the town’s infrastructure to meet high standards and ensure responsive services for residents. Our plan is to establish a well-equipped fire station and focus on parks and green development initiatives.”

Efforts are underway to provide accessible and affordable living environments for all residents, recognizing the importance of sustainable land tenure and housing options.

“We are advocating for inclusion in national housing initiatives.”

The town aims to foster an environment conducive to SME growth, wealth creation, and poverty reduction. Simeon emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses and stimulating tourism to generate income opportunities and improve livelihoods.

Based on their collective dream, the vision for the town is to achieve economic prosperity and create jobs for the town and its inhabitants under its strategic priorities.

“We want to create a town that offers quality services and where people can experience the culture of Usakos.”

Simeon highlighted a lucrative future for Usakos.

“A solar power project has commenced on the outskirts, supplementing NamPower’s grid, with plans for additional similar ventures (Hopsol). The council actively pursues Usakos’s transformation into a transport and logistics hub, exploring the construction of a dry port in collaboration with Namport, leveraging existing railway infrastructure.”

Additionally, industrial land allocation to potential investors is being considered, with plans to subdivide and survey available land.

“More opportunities abound in various sectors, including education, health, agriculture, tourism, transport, logistics, and mining, attracting public sector investments.” – [email protected]
