Walvis Bay welcomes largest aircraft yet

Leandrea Mouers
The Walvis Bay International Airport recently made history when it welcomed the aircraft of the Belgian King, an Airbus A340, marking the largest aircraft the airport has accommodated thus far.

According to Chriszelda George, the airport manager, this is a Code 4E aircraft, and the airport’s runway capacity stands at 4F.

“This is the largest commercial aircraft that has landed at Walvis Bay in the past two decades. The significance of this landing is that it potentially opens up the Walvis Bay airspace to other operators,” she added.

George emphasised that with various industries booming, such as oil and gas and green hydrogen, as well as existing industries like tourism and fisheries, there is a need to meet the requirements of these types of aircraft.

“It indicates that these large aircraft can land at Walvis Bay and that we are ready to accommodate them.”
