Fenata promotes sustainable tourism

Ellanie Smit
The Federation of Namibian Tourism Associations (Fenata) serves as the umbrella organisation representing Namibia's tourism industry.

Its primary objective is to promote and develop sustainable tourism practices that benefit the country's economy, environment and communities.

Fenata collaborates with various stakeholders, including government entities, private sector participants and local communities, to ensure a cohesive approach to tourism development. Fenata's member associations encompass a broad spectrum of the tourism sector, each playing a vital role in upholding the federation's mission.

Fenata said that the responsibilities of each association member include adherence to ethical standards.

Fenata member associations are mandated to adhere to ethical standards.

“Members are expected to conduct their operations with integrity, ensuring transparency and honesty in all business dealings. This includes providing accurate information to clients and partners and maintaining fair pricing structures," the association stated recently.

“Members should implement practices that minimise environmental impact, such as reducing waste, conserving water and energy, and supporting conservation initiatives. This commitment extends to respecting wildlife and natural habitats, ensuring that tourism activities do not harm the environment," the statement noted.

Quality service and safety

Members should also be committed to quality service delivery.

“Providing high-quality services to tourists is paramount. Members must ensure that their offerings meet or exceed industry standards and that staff are adequately trained to deliver exceptional customer service.”

The association said that cultural respect and promotion is also important.

“Members should respect and promote Namibia's rich cultural heritage. This involves engaging with local communities, supporting cultural initiatives, and ensuring that tourism activities do not exploit or disrespect local traditions and customs.”

Another important aspect is safety and security.

“Ensuring the safety and security of tourists is a critical responsibility. Members must adhere to safety regulations, maintain necessary certifications, and have protocols in place to handle emergencies effectively.”

Fenata added that members are encouraged to actively participate in Fenata's initiatives, attend meetings and contribute to advocacy efforts aimed at promoting and improving Namibia's tourism sector.

“This collaborative approach helps in addressing industry challenges and advancing common goals. By fulfilling these responsibilities, Fenata's association members contribute to a thriving, responsible, and sustainable tourism industry in Namibia, enhancing the country's reputation as a premier travel destination.”
