Matteus 26:40: “Daarna kom Hy na die dissipels toe terug en kry hulle aan die slaap. Hy sê toe vir Petrus: ‘Kon julle nie eens een uur lank saam met My waak nie?’”

Wanneer Jesus met God oor sy naderende lyding in Getsemane worstel, het Hy sy dissipels nodig. Matteus se evangelie beklemtoon dat Jesus Immanuel is, wat beteken “God met ons”. Hy sinspeel op hierdie woord in hierdie gedeelte wanneer Jesus van sy dissipels vra om “by” Hom te bly. Hy het Petrus en die seuns van Sebedeus “saamgeneem” (Matteus 26:37) en pleit by hulle om “saam met” Hom te waak (26:38). By sy terugkeer vind Hy hulle egter aan die slaap.

Vir Christene is die swakhede van Petrus en die seuns van Sebedeus ’n waarskuwing. Uit vrees vir marginalisering deur hulle Joodse vriende en familie het lesers van die evangelie dikwels gesukkel om met Christus te identifiseer.

Ons moenie die dissipels se foute en swakhede herhaal nie. God is met ons, maar slaap ons? God is met ons, maar staan ons by Hom? God is met ons, maar is ons afwesig? Ly Jesus onder ons moegheid?

Tog sluit hierdie evangelie af met 'n wonderlike belofte aan hierdie swak dissipels: “Ek is altyd by julle” — Immanuel! (Matteus 28:20). Wat ’n wonderlike God!
