From statistics to tourism

Nelson Ashipala is the newly appointed manager for corporate communications, social media and MICE at Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR). He was appointed in January 2022 and previously worked at the Namibia Statistic Agency. This was a total career change as working with statistics is very different from working in tourism.

Ashipala was born in Angola and raised in Rundu. He says he was a naughty child who was quite the adrenalin junkie and wanted to be a pilot. Growing up he was fascinated at how individuals could work in the media industry and that is what led him to his present career. “Growing up, I was fascinated by how one can work in the media industry, as TV that time was our favourite pastime, the rest as they say is history.”

Ashipala says he is what he calls a part-time introvert, seeing that his job forces him to interact with people. “My job forces me to be out there but technically, when the suits come off, I just want to spend time on my own in my own space,” says Ashipala. His first week at NWR involved trying to understand how things work and how he can contribute to the tourism industry.

Ashipala’s love for tourism is what brought him into this industry. He has been to all the continents and has travelled the length and breadth of Namibia.

Solving problems, being creative and the challenges that come with this job, not forgetting the interactions that he gets to make, are a few things that he enjoys about his job.

As many people might know the tourism industry was hit quite hard by the Covid-19 pandemic, so coming up with low-budget ideas is a challenge that Ashipala currently faces. “One has to creatively find new ways of income generation. But my mantra is only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly,” said Ashipala. “Covid-19 has taught us there is more to life than just living. Let us make time for what is important.”
