New cargo handling equipment for Namport
Enhanced service delivery
The Namibian Ports Authority intends to amplify and strengthen its capacity to deliver services to its clients with the acquisition of new equipment.
The Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) commissioned two new reach stackers and three forklifts at the Port of Walvis Bay recently.
The reach stackers with a price tag of N$14 785 330.00 were acquired from Liebherr Africa and the forklifts with a price tag of N$2 million were purchased from Allied Equipment.
The Port of Walvis Bay now boast with a reach stacker fleet of 10. The two reach stackers and two of the forklifts will be deployed at the Port of Walvis Bay while the other forklift will be allocated to the Port of Lüderitz.
The Chief Executive Officer of Namport, Andrew Kanime, said that the acquisition of the new equipment will amplify and strengthen Namport’s capacity to deliver services.
“As it is Namport’s core business to handle cargo, the acquisition of this cargo handling equipment was a critical step on the company’s roadmap towards effective and efficient service delivery to its valued customers. Most importantly the new equipment will reduce downtimes in operations, streamline our repairs and maintenance costs as well as rationalize the waiting times of customers and the costs of doing business with our ports,” said Kanime.
He added that despite the limited financial resources and the depressed economic and market conditions, Namport regards these acquisitions and additions to its fleet of equipment as a tangible reaffirmation of its seriousness and resolve to address the challenge of old equipment and disruption of operations.
According to Kanime, Namport has also activated plans to acquire new wharf cranes for the bulk terminal with the procurement process currently underway.
“I reassure you that we are carrying on full stream with our plans to revamp our equipment and remain committed to enhancing our customers’ experiences at our ports through efficient and highly productive service offerings”.
Elias Mwenyo, the executive: commercial services for Namport, highlighted that testament to its continued growth, Namport for the ten months period which ended 31 January 2022, increased its total twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) handled by 4%, while break-bulk volumes have increased by 173 587 tonnes or 5%. This is commendable given current economic whirlwinds.
