Namibian police inspector general Joseph Shikongo has officially opened a basic police training at Ondangwa at the Ruben 'Danger' Ashipala Police Training Centre in Oshana Region.

The training, which commenced on 1 August, comprises a total of 842 trainees, with 572 men and 270 women, and will run for a duration of nine months.

The Namibian police force is entrusted with the preservation of internal security, maintenance of law and order, prevention of crimes, investigation of offences or alleged offences, and protection of life and property, as stipulated in the Police Act.

Genuine passion

Shikongo described policing as a profession that requires unwavering commitment, integrity and genuine passion to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

"The training of these cadet constables will equip them with the necessary skills, knowledge and values to become guardians of justice, pillars of society and protectors of peace and security," he said.

He added that law enforcement agencies play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and security of communities.

New skills

The training course also covers contemporary policing issues such as transnational organised crimes and social issues like stress management, emotional intelligence and financial literacy.

Shikongo said the training "is not solely about acquiring knowledge and technical skills – it is also aimed at transformation, cultivating character, promoting ethical conduct, and instilling a deep sense of obedience and respect for human rights."

He cautioned the trainees that the months they will be in training will be intensive and extremely demanding.

"Trainees are expected and encouraged to display a high sense of dedication, discipline and commitment towards their daily activities during this course," he emphasised.
