Namibian Heritage Week 2023 will be celebrated from 18 to 24 September under the theme “Heritage and Culture: A ‘Rock-Solid’ Foundation in Namibian Sign Language”.

The Heritage Week team has decided that each year, the theme uses a local indigenous language as part of its commitment to promoting pride in Namibia’s cultural diversity.

The media launch of this year's edition of Heritage Week will take place at the Woermannhaus Art Gallery tomorrow, on 24 August.

On this occasion, Nadine Phiri of the Scientific Society Swakopmund will provide background information about Namibian Heritage Week, and Lynette van Niekerk from the Arts Association will introduce some of the activities lined up for this year’s event.

Hosted by the Heritage and Culture Committee of Swakopmund, the annually celebrated event is an opportunity for Namibians to celebrate their heritage.

It also encourages Namibians to keep their culture alive and pass on inherited traditions and knowledge to our descendants.

“Heritage gives us pride in our identity. You can’t know where you’re going if you don’t know where you’re coming from. We are encouraging people to experience the beauty of Namibia’s cultural diversity or to visit a different part of the country to experience our natural wonders,” emphasized Phiri.

She added that the ultimate aim is that there should be a week dedicated to Namibian heritage each year, which includes participation from the government, organizations, and individuals from all fourteen regions for the week to successfully become an annual and national event.
