The municipality of Swakopmund received a donation of six bicycles, which will be used to enhance patrolling efforts in key areas and, in doing so, foster a greater sense of security among residents.

The donated bicycles are each equipped with a service kit package to ensure longevity.

"This donation to the neighbourhood watch marks a significant step towards enhancing patrolling capabilities and increasing vigilance in critical areas. Council extends its heartfelt gratitude to Phillipe Laporte and his team at Desert & Ocean for their vision and generosity in supporting this vital cause. Their contribution not only underscores the importance of community involvement in combating crime but also serves as an inspiration for others to join hands in creating safer and more secure communities," said the mayor of Swakopmund, Dina Namubes.

She added that the gesture by Laporte and his team signifies a collaborative effort towards addressing the pressing issue of crime within the community.

"It recognises the importance of proactive measures in combating crime and plays a pivotal role in expanding the capabilities of law enforcement officers and community volunteers. Bicycles are being utilised as effective tools in crime prevention efforts. They enable law enforcement officers and community volunteers to patrol neighbourhoods more efficiently. This in turn becomes a visible deterrent to criminal activities."

Namubes said that crime remains a persistent concern in Swakopmund.

"It incorporates a variety of offenses, ranging from ATM fraud to physical attacks on workers commuting to and from work. The recent increase in criminal activities has underscored the urgency of concerted action to safeguard the safety and well-being of residents and visitors alike. The municipality of Swakopmund has thus been diligently working towards creating a safer environment through various programs and interventions in response to these challenges, and the establishment of the Swakopmund Safety Forum stands as a testament to the commitment of local authorities and stakeholders in addressing crime-related issues comprehensively.”

The mayor called upon residents and stakeholders to remain vigilant and actively participate in initiatives aimed at promoting safety and security for all. Laporte challenged members of the public to donate unused or slightly damaged bicycles that can be used for crime prevention.
