The Shack Dwellers group of Narraville has officially begun their journey towards affordable housing, starting with site cleaning on Saturday.
The group, consisting of 170 members who have been saving since 2010, applied for land in Narraville and has been allocated a plot. However, they are still awaiting final council resolution before they can begin building their homes.
The group, which previously completed 68 houses under similar conditions, has appointed local contractor RMH Perfect Investments under Rodney Hanganda’s leadership to start with the earthworks once the land is fully approved. However, the members are in need of funding from the private sector and community, as well as their own savings, to complete the task.
Members have been saving as little as N$1 per day in order to improve their standard of living and acquire affordable housing.
Led by Francisco Maree, the chairperson of Narraville Network, the group consists of low-income individuals such as single mothers, domestic workers, pensioners, and those who do not qualify for bank loans. Despite their challenging circumstances, they are determined to work hard and not give up on achieving their goal of owning a home.
The Shack Dwellers group of Narraville serves as an inspiring example of perseverance and community empowerment.
