The Shrikes hosted the annual Inland vs. Coast tournament at Namib Park Bowls Club in Walvis Bay recently.

This is an annual fundraising event that pits teams from all inland clubs against clubs from the coast, and this year, Inland brought four mixed teams in their effort to wrestle the trophy from the coastal clubs.

Namib Park has recently converted its greens to an artificial surface, and the speed of the new surface was an eye-opener for the visitors. The trophy, as a result, remains at the coast for the eighth year in succession as the coastal clubs maintain their dominance.

The competition also rewards the top-performing teams with monetary prizes, and again, three teams from the coast are featured in the results.

First was the team of Axel Krahenbuhl, Julian Viljoen, Yvonne Carstens, and Francois van Niekerk. A close second were Graham Snyman, Lynne Lindsay-Payne, Brian Nel, and Allan Langestrassen. Third place went to Dave Gibbons, Gordon Damster, Peter Fourie, and Annelien Langestrassen.

The second round of the National League took place on 9 and 10 March. Swakopmund Bowls Club and Walvis Bay Bowls Club hosted Tsumeb Bowls Club and United Bowls Club, respectively. The third round games away to Tsumeb scheduled for 16 and 17 March were postponed to 13 April. This month’s bowling action will conclude with the Namib Park Bowls Club (NPBC) Atlantic Trips to be played on 23 and 24 March. This competition is open to everyone.

The Namibian Bowling Association selection committee has established the national squad structure, which comprises two squads, namely the Eagles and the Hawks. The Eagles, consisting of eight players, will form the primary pool for national team selection. The Hawks will serve as a supplemental squad. Selection for both squads is based on committee discretion and ongoing performance evaluation.

The names of the selected squad members were announced before the prize-giving ceremony at Namib Park Bowls Club in Walvis Bay on Sunday.

The Eagles women’s squad members are Elzaan de Vries (Namib Park), Amy Human (Eros), Bianca Lewis (Swakopmund), Amanda Steenkamp (Eros), Marietjie van den Bergh (Tsumeb), Huibrecht van Wyk (TransNamib), Lesley Vermeulen (Eros), and Diana Viljoen (Swakopmund). The Hawks women’s squad members are Marinda Bezuidenhout (Eros) and Annelize Wolfaardt (Namib Park).
