Erongo Business and Tourism Expo has applied for the use of the facilities from 16 October 2024 to 3 November 2024 (19 days), and consideration was given as to whether the Walvis Bay municipal council would again waive the facility fees or whether the fees should be paid.

The Management Committee (MC) of the council of the harbour town recommended that the council rescind a decision to partner with Erongo Business and Tourism Expo and not to support the event financially. The recommendation is based on the fact that Erongo Business and Tourism Expo has been a commercial enterprise in existence for at least 17 years.

This sentiment was expressed at a meeting between representatives of the office of the mayor and the corporate services and community development department on 9 February 2024.

No further support will thus be granted to Erongo Business and Tourism Expo. Normal rental rates for the facility or facilities to be used will apply going forward, and resources will rather be channelled to the annual Maritime Festival.

The MC pointed out that the municipality of Walvis Bay, under Council resolution item 11.16 dated 25 July 2023 approved the annual hosting of its own event, the Maritime Festival, for which funds are set aside. The Maritime Festival was held from 4 to 5 August 2023 and council set aside a budgetary provision of N$200 000. Council also approved that this event should be hosted annually. The 2024 event is scheduled from 24 to 29 June 2024.

According to the MC, no partnering agreement for the future hosting of the event was concluded between the municipality and Erongo Business and Tourism Expo, and no budgetary provision was made in the current budget for this purpose.

The event was hosted at the civic centre premises for 15 years, with the organisers annually leasing the town hall and parking areas for the event. A decision to support the Erongo Business and Tourism Expo was adopted on 6 September 2022. The usage fees for the area, amounting to N$39 205.18 for the four-day event, were waived.

Council also approved partnering with the expo organisers for the future hosting of the event and that specific provision be made in the operating budget for such a partnership. The facilities were again subsidised to the value of N$50 818.82 by council for the 2023 event.
