Facelift for harbour town's busy intersections
The municipality of Walvis Bay embarked on a mission to rehabilitate major road intersections with interlocks back in 2022.
According to the municipality, this type of rehabilitation was necessitated by the exponential increase in heavy vehicles using the town's roads, mainly due to the growing transport and logistics industry. As such, the increased maintenance works on the road sections - specifically at the intersections, where high-turning actions were prevalent - triggered a review of the current surface type by the relevant department.
The municipality explained that interlock paving is generally more durable than asphalt paving and can last for several decades with the necessary maintenance. It is also less affected by weather and climate changes, such as exposure to rain, cracking, and deformations.
The latest intersection to be rehabilitated is the one at Hanna Mupetami and 5th Street East. This road receives a high volume of heavy vehicles headed towards the port and the industrial area. The next intersection to receive much-needed attention is the one at Agaat and Volstruis Street in Kuisebmond.
Previously, the roads and building department successfully rehabilitated the intersections at Sam Nujoma Avenue and Hanna Mupetami Road, Hidipo Hamutenya Drive and Circumferential Road as well as the Sam Nujoma Avenue and Kruis Street intersection.
The municipality also informed coastal residents of the partial road closure of a 200 m-stretch of the MR54 road between Langstrand Ext1 and Ext2 from 8 to 18 September due to a pipeline replacement exercise. All works will be next to the road and drivers are advised to drive with caution in this area. Road users are requested to strictly adhere to the traffic signage in the area.
