The Nedbank Swakopmund Food Festival once again surpassed the expectations of foodies and visitors alike.

The three day festival filled to the brim with locals and visitors from afar, tasty food, loads of fun and good vibes, took place from 14 to 16 December at the Amphitheatre in Swakopmund.

The newest members on the block, DSTV, pulled the crowd with their DSTV kitchen and lounge area that hosted international chefs and cooks. The festival accommodated over 40 vendors who showed up with delectable items. The Fire Alley accommodated chefs, kitchens, and traders while the Food Truck Alley was parked to full capacity with food trucks and street food vendors. Local artists and DJs kept the vibes going for those in attendance while the Sugar King Kids Zone had all the young ones entertained.

Some vendors said that this year’s attendance was bigger than the previous year. Nicoleen Benz, the owner of Grandma’s Kitchen served mouth-watering and heartwarming traditional meals. Her menu consisted of “rooster broodjies”, sausage rolls and delicious mutton and beef chops. Benz used to own a Grandma’s Kitchen restaurant before it closed down during the Covid 19 pandemic. She however continues to serve delicious meals through a catering service.

Another crowd puller was Oom Asser Mukapili, who prepared and dished up fresh seafood. The seasoned cook had people coming back for more lobsters. Asser, who is a returning vendor to the Nedbank Food Festival said, “I don't sell food. I sell my very own and uniquely conjured taste. It’s more than just a selling and marketing opportunity but a teaching and learning platform as well.”

He mentioned that he freely shares information on what he is serving, how it is caught, prepared and the health benefits with every person he serves. Asser said that he has also been able to learn and picked up quite a few tips and tricks from his fellow vendors at the festival.

Ester Silas, the Nedbank Kapana Cook-off winner for 2023, made her first appearance at the food festival with her award winning kapana recipe and skill. According to Silas the Kapana cook-off was a success and an absolute blast. She mentioned that she has never attended the Nedbank Food Festival before, but definitely plans on returning in her own capacity. “I have learned so much from my fellow vendors here and was blown away by the attendance throughout the entire festival.”
