Hotto even scoring goals off the pitch
Charity begins at home
A local soccer star's charitable foundation continues to motivate and inspire youngsters.
The Deon Hotto Foundation (DHF) recently handed over 150 sanitary packs, a brand-new laptop, and a framed Deon Hotto soccer jersey to the Atlantic Junior Secondary School in Swakopmund.
The school is special to Hotto, who was a student there during his formative years from grade 4 to 7. “Today's donation signifies our unwavering dedication to creating a brighter future for our children. Let us remember that our collective efforts can drive lasting change and, together, we can do more for the underprivileged kids in our community,” said Carl Pesat, the chairperson of DHF.
He added that the foundation is dedicated to uplifting and inspiring underprivileged children and communities through sports development and has been doing so since its inception in 2018. “DHF has made donations and supported sports clubs, retirement homes, and safety houses. We also hosted the inaugural Deon Hotto Charity Cup to showcase talent and raise funds to support various charitable initiatives. Our mission is to support underprivileged children and communities through sports development and we are looking forward to extending our initiatives to further empower the community in 2024.”
The overall purpose of the foundation is to support and create opportunities for women and children. To achieve this, DHF organises and hosts the under-15/17 DHF Youth Cup supported by South African Premier Soccer League clubs, scouts, coaches, and agents with the aim of identifying and exporting talent.
The foundation is also working to address the lack of soccer facilities by establishing five-a-side courts in less affluent neighborhoods countrywide in addition to creating a support network for grassroots-level football academies. It also strives to enable mobility and sportsmanship.
Deon Hotto (born on 29 October 1990 in Swakopmund) is a Namibian international footballer (midfielder) who plays for the Orlando Pirates and the Namibian national team. He began his professional career at Swapokmund’s Blue Boys until 2011 before moving to Windhoek where he played for African Stars from 2012 to 2014. Hotto then moved to South Africa, where he was signed by Bloemfontein Celtic (2014 to 2018) and also played for Bidvest Wits for two years.
