I will unite the VaGciriku community – Mashika
Coronation slated for 30 September
Felix Muraghuli Mashika says he will focus on several key challenges facing his community, including education, land and ensuring access to basic services.
Heir to the VaGciriku throne, Felix Muraghuli Mashika, says his aim is to unify the tribe, which has been facing various challenges since the passing of the late Hompa Kassian Shiyambi, who died in November 2019.
Speaking to Ewi lyaNooli, the 47-year-old Mashika said following the outcome of the line ministry’s probe into the chieftainship dispute, which saw him declared the rightful heir to the throne, it is time to focus on improving the lives of the VaGciriku community.
"Everything is done now. I am looking forward to my coronation and then focusing on improving the lives of my people," Mashika said.
Legacy continued
Apart from land matters, Mashika said among the challenges facing the community are children not attending school, stateless persons in the community, and a lack of basic services. He aims to address these issues together with various stakeholders.
He added that, having worked closely with the late chief, he learnt a lot and will ensure that his legacy lives on.
"Children are not going to school, and it’s a matter I want addressed. Our children need to go to school so they can have a better future. There are people without documents in the community, and they need to be assisted. These are just some of the things I will aim to address," he said.
Unity
Mashika said the protracted chieftainship battle has divided members of the royal house and the community – something he wants to address.
"We need to be united and address the plight of the people; hence, my call is to work with everyone, even those who preferred other candidates. I will work with everyone to lead my people to a better future," Mashika said.
Mashika said the chiefs’ council has written to the line ministry, informing them that the coronation is scheduled to take place on 30 September.
