Indila Abrahams was recently sworn in as the new Junior Mayor of Swakopmund. The 15 year old, has stepped into the role that diligently compliments her exceptional blend of academic excellence, leadership, and community spirit.

Raised in the coastal town of Swakopmund, Abrahams is a grade 10 learner at Pro-Ed Akademie.

Abraham's educational journey began at Riverside Private School, where she completed her primary education. In 2022, she transitioned to Pro-Ed Akademie for high school, a move that marked the start of a new chapter filled with challenges and opportunities. Her ability to balance academics with a number of extracurricular activities speaks volumes about her dedication and time management skills.

As a chess player for the Namibian National team, she has improved her strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, qualities that undoubtedly contribute to her leadership capabilities. Her commitment extends to the hockey field, where she represents her school with pride. In addition to her athletic pursuits, Abrahams serves as the Chief Editor of her school’s newsletter, showcasing her skills in communication and journalism.

Beyond academics and sports, she is deeply involved in her community. At Christian Revival Church (CRC), she serves as an usher and leads a youth cell group, reflecting her strong sense of responsibility and spiritual commitment. Her involvement in these areas highlights her ability to lead, mentor, and inspire others.

Joining the Junior Town Council

Abraham’s entry into the Junior Town Council (JTC) in 2023 was driven by a desire to further develop her leadership skills and engage with the youth of Swakopmund in meaningful ways. "I joined the JTC because I saw it as a chance to not only grow as a leader but also to actively participate in addressing the challenges faced by our youth," she explains. Her time with the JTC has been transformative, providing her with practical experience in managing projects, working collaboratively with others, and navigating complex issues.

One of the most valuable lessons she has learned is the importance of teamwork. "Executing projects successfully requires commitment and collaboration from every team member," she notes. She has also gained a holistic perspective on leadership and problem-solving, learning that challenges are not obstacles but opportunities for growth and improvement.

New Chapter as Junior Mayor

The recent swearing-in of Abrahams as the Junior Mayor has been a moment of great significance for her. "I feel very humbled and honoured by the trust that has been placed in me," she shares. "I thank God for this opportunity, as I would not have made it this far without his guidance." Abraham’s excitement about her new role is evident, and she is eager to work alongside her fellow councillors to drive positive change in Swakopmund.

For Abrahams, the title of Junior Mayor is more than a prestigious position, but rather a representation of a platform to bring about meaningful change. "This role comes with significant responsibilities and I am ready to tackle every obstacle to ensure that the JTC makes a lasting impact on our town for future generations," she says. Her commitment to making a difference is driven by a sense of purpose and a deep belief in the potential of every youth in Swakopmund.

Vision and Core Values

During her tenure, Abrahams plans to address several critical issues affecting the youth, including drug and alcohol abuse, mental health, homelessness, unemployment, and academic pressure. She envisions implementing programs and projects that not only tackle these challenges but also support young people in finding their purpose and achieving their full potential.

Her core values play a crucial role in guiding her daily tasks and decision-making. "I am persistent and believe in never giving up, no matter how difficult a situation may be," she asserts. "I also value teamwork, flexibility, and clear communication. When I am given a task, I ensure that every team member understands what is expected of them." Her belief in the importance of every youth’s voice and the power they hold to effect change reflects her dedication to inclusive and impactful leadership.

In her concluding remarks, she offers a message of encouragement to her peers saying, "I would like to thank everyone for this incredible opportunity. Let us move forward with purpose, enthusiasm, and a shared vision for a brighter future for Swakopmund."
