Leg 5 of the national circuit racing championship was held in seven classes at the Tony Rust raceway near the capital on Saturday.

Only eleven racers entered for the day, with Nadine Liebenberg as the newcomer in her first-ever race in a Chevy Lumina 5-litre V8.

The main show was between MP Pretorius in his beautifully prepared VW Golf in the Super Car Class and Bazill van Rhyn in his Audi TT in Class A, with Michel Rust hot on their heels in a Class B Volvo.

Van Rhyn and Pretorius made their intensions clear in the qualifying rounds clocking blistering quick lap times of 1 minute 10.137 seconds (1:10.137) and 1:08.986 respectively. Rust followed in 1:13.292 on the 2.4 kilometer track.

Hein Bisschoff (Class B) also raced flawlessly in his Chevy V8, pushing Rust to his best times. Bisschoff started with 1:15.419 in the qualifying rounds and finished with 1:13.84 in the race.

The rose between the camelthorns, Nadine Liebenberg, timed 1:20.207 in qualifying in her very fast Chevy Lumina 5-litre V8. As the rookie in Class X she initially found herself at the back of the pack on the starting grid.

Liebenberg’s nerves got the better of her during the three racing heats of eight laps each. However, she managed to settle down and got the hang of the temperamental Lumina to register her fastest lap in 1:17.15 – more than three seconds faster than her best in qualifying and only four seconds slower than the best lap time in Class B.

Liebenberg told Sport Wrap after the race: “I was serious to race, but I thought my husband Kris would buy me something like a Golf to race in. Then they arrived with this Chevy from Cape Town ... I was totally surprised by the car!

“I did not have a lot of practice time in the car, but going forward I hope to increase my lap times and also to race in a higher class. I really enjoyed this race, it was super nice.”

Pieter Greeff, Hein Bisschoff and Ewald Bisschoff also competeted in last weekend’s Windhoek Shell V-Power Rally.
