The Erongo Region Netball Association is spearheading efforts to promote netball at all levels.
The Erongo Region Netball Association (ERNA) recently hosted trials for U/21 players at the Kuisebmond netball courts.
Sixteen players between the ages of 18 and 21 before 31 March 2024, attended the occasion. The fitness levels of the participants were really put to the test since it was hot and windy on the day.
“The outcome was a success. We selected nine players, with another two already selected at trials hosted previously. The players that were selected have a lot of talent and can give a few players a go at the national trials that will be hosted in Windhoek on the weekend of 16 to 18 February,” said Mildred !Ganeb, the technical director of ERNA. She also thanked the municipality for providing the courts to ERNA at short notice.
The ladies that were selected are Mecky Abel, Megan von Lieres (Pro-Ed Academy), Cheree Brits (Dolphin), Sarah Awases, Johanna Nakathingo (Eleven Arrows), Rosa Gowases (Navy), Lina Shimanda (Eleven Arrows), Simone !Ganes (Independent), and Victoria Shigwedha (Blue Waters). Usuta Muvangua (Navy) and Elizabeth Besser are the two players who were selected on a previous occasion.
Von Lieres, who represents her school’s first team (Pro-Ed Academy), said her biggest dream is to play for the national team one day.
“What I enjoy the most about netball is the teamwork and constantly improving my game.”
According to Charles Muukua, the chairperson of ERNA, the region is privileged to have a national coach in its midst. Jones (Bobsey Kanku) Musambani will represent the country as head coach of the U/21 national netball team that will be playing in the World Cup qualifiers. He is also the head coach of Eleven Arrows and coaches some schools in Walvis Bay as well.
“My dream is to lead the Namibian U/21 national team to the World Cup. I also want to see that all schools get proper training facilities, not just for the development of netball in the country but also for the quality of players we produce as regions,” said Musambani.
He added that this would not be possible without the support of the community and companies.
The ERNA EXCO also hosted its annual meeting for the region earlier this year. Four open positions had to be filled. These positions were open due to the previous members resigning. A very transparent selection process occurred, with the honorary and former president of Netball Namibia, Lydia Mutenda, in attendance.
The open vacancies were then filled by Juané Grobler (fixtures secretary), Michelle Brooks (deputy fixtures secretary) Xanthe Wittmann (public relations officer), and Belinda Bezuidenhout (additional member). The rest of the committee members are Charles Muukua (chairperson), Charlane Minnaar (vice chairperson), Deseline !Auchas (secretary general), Mildred M. !Ganeb (technical director), and Kazavanga Ingrieth (athletes representative).
