Ondangwa provides water, power to Omashaka

Tuyeimo Haidula
In line with the Ondangwa town council’s strategic plan, work to provide Omashaka Proper informal settlement residents with water and power connections is expected to be completed next month.

This was announced by council spokesperson Petrina Shitalangaho-Mutikisha.

In June, the town council announced that, in order to provide urban and low-cost housing, 600 plots have been earmarked to be serviced at Omashaka for the 2022/2023 financial year.

For now, 314 of the erven will benefit from the current work, while the remainder will be serviced at a later date.

Before Christmas

Shitalangaho-Mutikisha said the servicing of the area started on 7 November and is expected to be completed by the first week of December.

“This is a one-month project so that we can have services provided to the people residing in these areas before the financial year ends.”

The urban and rural development ministry allocated N$2.5 million to the Oshana regional council for rural development programmes in Ongwediva, Ondangwa and Oshakati, which will see the servicing and allocation of 863 plots during the 2022/2023 financial year.

The water reticulation and electricity services project, which commenced in August of this year, is currently 90% complete. Council has invested nearly N$4 million in the electricity project.

Inside work

Shitalangaho-Mutikisha said in order to cut costs, council employees are carrying out the work.

“This is part of cost-cutting measures; our employees have expertise in carrying out similar projects as they have done the same in other areas of the town,” she said.

Upon allocation, house owners will be presented with an opportunity to connect and have water supplied directly to their homes.
