The annual Swakop Uranium Husab Marathon is back and promises to be bigger and better than ever.

The event, which was placed on hold during the Covid-19 pandemic, will take place at the Husab access road near Arandis on Saturday 30 September. The Husab Marathon typically attracts close to 600 runners and, according to the organisers, the aim is to attract even more participants this year to promote the importance of one’s health and well-being.

The marathon was first held in 2015 with just over 250 participants. The fifth annual Husab Marathon in 2019 accommodated more than a thousand athletes. Paulus Iiyambo won the men’s 42 km marathon in a time of 2:30:55 and Alina Armas was the first female to cross the finish line in a time of 3:13:47.

There will be cash prizes to the value of close to N$200 000 to be won by the winners of the races as well as lucky draw prizes. The race offerings include a marathon, half marathon (new), 10 km race, and a 5 km fun run. This year will also see the introduction of a free kiddies race for children below the age of six years to allow the youth to embark on their health journeys early.

Free transport to the venue will be provided to runners on Saturday morning from the Dome in Swakopmund at 05:30, the zebra crossing in Arandis from 07:00, and the taxi rank in Kuisebmond in Walvis Bay (along Nathaniel Maxuilili Street) from 06:00.

Participants who wish to take their vehicles to the entrance of the Husab Mine, off the B2, are welcome to do so. Secure parking will be arranged at the starting point.

Registration process

The entry fee is N$30 for all entries. Registration (collection of race material) will take place on Friday 29 September from 14:30 to 20:00 at the Vineta Sports Field on Welwitschia Road in Swakopmund.

Registration will be allowed on Friday, but a late registration fee of N$50 will apply. Kiddie race applications will also take place on Friday. Schoolchildren below the age of 18 can also take part for free as long as a school official or parent signs off their waiver. Participants who are unable to attend the registration are advised to send someone to collect their race material on their behalf. No registration will be allowed on race day.

Applications can be done online via the link https://www.entryninja.com/events/79497-husab-marathon until the end of today.

The Husab Mine - with a potential life of more than 20 years - is the second-largest uranium mine in the world with a total investment of US$5 billion.
