Port of Walvis Bay a hive of activity
Steady flow of vessels
An estimated 33 vessels could call at the Port of Walvis Bay between today and 24 February.
The provisional port log provided by the Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) indicates that 33 vessels will call at the Port of Walvis Bay between today and 24 February.
Most of these will be container vessels (8) with the AS Fabiana due for arrival on 8 February. Maersk Amazon will arrive on 9 February, ALS Flora on 10 February, MSC Helena II on 13 February, Luanda Express on 14 February, Hanover Express on 18 February, MSC Resilient III on 20 February and CMA CGM Don Pascuale on 22 February.
The Hanover Express, with a length of 335 metres and a carrying capacity of 8 600 TEU, will be the biggest to dock this month. It was built in 2007 and is currently sailing under the flag of Liberia.
The Roro Silver Ray is scheduled to arrive on 6 February, while Bourbon Clear could be the first of two tugs to call on 6 February with the second Seacor Ohio scheduled to arrive on 7 February.
There are also five general cargo vessels heading for the Port of Walvis Bay. Dolanjo and Oya 1 are scheduled to dock on 7 February. Alexandros 1 could arrive on 14 February followed by the arrivals of Celestia on 18 February and UAL Houston on 19 February.
Four fishing vessels could dock. Katanga, which belongs to Trade Ocean, and Desert Jewel, which belongs to Erongo Marine Enterprises, are scheduled to arrive on 7 February. Komesho, which belongs to Trade Ocean, and Tutungeni, which belongs to Namsov, are due to call on 8 February.
The three passenger vessels en route to the Port of Walvis Bay include the Norwegian Dawn (11 February), MSC Poesia (23 February) and Pacific World scheduled to arrive on 24 February.
The Norwegian Dawn is on a 12-night Africa cruise. The itinerary started on 1 February 2024, and will end on 13 February 2024, in Cape Town. Constructed for US$450 million in 2002 and christened by actress Kim Cattrall, the 294-meter-long vessel with 14 decks and 1 170 cabins has a carrying capacity of 2 808 passengers and 1 032 crew members.
The MSC Poesia, which recently made her maiden call at the Port of Walvis Bay, is currently on a 115-day, one-way from Civitavecchia-Rome to Southampton cruise, themed "Easter". The itinerary started on 4 January in Civitavecchia-Rome, Italy, and will end on 28 April 2024, in Southampton, England. The vessel will be visiting 47 ports. The MSC Poesia is 294 m in length with 16 decks and 1 275 cabins. She can accommodate 3 060 passengers and 1 039 crew members and was built in 2006 for US$360 million and christened by actress Sophia Loren.
With nine passenger decks and offering a spacious, relaxing environment for around-the-world journeys, the Pacific World is the largest ship ever sailed in the 40-year history of Peace Boat. Constructed in 1995 for US$300 million and christened by American writer and historian Dorothy Sterling, the Pacific World is 261 metres in length with 14 decks and 1 008 cabins. It can accommodate 2 419 passengers and 924 crew members.
The three bulk carriers scheduled to call at the Port of Walvis Bay include Federal Bearing (9 February), Bold Mariner (16 February) and Van Infinity on 23 February. The multipurpose vessels Red Cedar and Silverfjord are scheduled to call on 10 and 17 February respectively. Two tankers, Maritime Tuniga (7 February) and KK Marlin (9 February) are scheduled to call at the Port of Walvis Bay.
Savanna Breeze will be the only reefer heading to the Port of Walvis Bay and could arrive on 12 February.
