Project Shine to spark change
The municipality of Swakopmund recently launched the 2024 edition of Project Shine.
The project which promotes cleanliness, recycling, and seeks to contribute to social upliftment within the Swakopmund community, has been successfully managed since its launch in 2007 on World Environmental Day and is backed by Bannerman Resources, First National Bank, Plastic Packaging, Rössing Uranium and Namibia Breweries.
Speaking at the occasion councillor Claus Goldbeck, said that it is no secret that the local surroundings have suffered from neglect and misuse.
“Piles of litter, plastic waste choking our waterways, and pollution tarnishing our air – these are not the characteristics of a community we wish to pass on to future generations.”
Goldbeck explained that the council aims to reclaim our parks, streets, and water bodies from the grip of pollution through organised clean-up efforts.
“This project aims to create a platform where the community takes ownership of their environment. Each piece of trash we pick up is not just a mere inconvenience removed; it is a step towards revitalising our environment, restoring its beauty, and safeguarding its health for generations to come. Every individual’s effort counts, and together, we can transform our community into a beacon of cleanliness and sustainability.”
Through educational programs, workshops, and outreach initiatives, council seeks to ignite a sense of environmental stewardship within our community.
“By raising awareness about the impacts of pollution, the importance of recycling, and the significance of conservation, we aim to empower individuals to make informed choices and take proactive steps towards a greener future. It is not just about cleaning up the mess; it is about preventing it from happening in the first place. With knowledge comes responsibility, and through Project Shine, we aim to equip every community member with the tools they need to be guardians of our planet.”
Goldbeck emphasised that Project Shine is more than just a campaign. “It is a movement, a testament to the power of collective action, the resilience of the human spirit, and the unwavering commitment to leave the world better than we found it. Let us remember that the change we seek begins within ourselves. Let us lead by example, inspire others to join our cause, and leave a legacy of hope, determination, and environmental stewardship for generations to come.”
Goldbeck urged community members to embrace the spirit of the Project Shine.
“Whether it is picking up litter, spreading awareness, or simply making more eco-conscious choices in your daily life, every action, no matter how small, brings us one step closer to our goal. Together, let us shine brightly and illuminate the path towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.”
