Ray Sasman, who walked the length of Namibia along the B1, managed to raise N$66,900 through her 1 820 kilometre walk.

Sasman, who started her walk on 1 May at Noordoewer, completed it on 12 August at Kasangula, the northernmost tip of Namibia.

She raised the funds for the envisioned Narraville Youth Centre.

“It transformed my life. It was tough, really hard. There were days when I thought, 'What am I doing? Will I be able to complete this?' But the journey taught me to trust that everything will be fine. Trust in your life's journey, and things will work out. And they did. Every single day, I was safe. I always had a place to sleep and water to drink. The Namibian people were incredibly warm and kind. I’m so grateful for that. It was phenomenal. That’s the spirit of the Namibian people.”

As for what's next for her, during her walk, she was offered a position as coordinator at The Siwja Project.

“I can’t believe I am moving to the North! I visited The Siwja Project during my walk. I arrived there on a Friday, and on Monday, which was the last day of my walk, they called and offered me the job. I accepted on the spot—it’s such an amazing opportunity.”

Sasman says she will definitely tackle another walk.

“I’m not sure when, where, or for how long. Maybe I'll walk through the northern part of Namibia along the rivers—it’s still to be confirmed.”

Throughout her walk, Sasman battled steep inclines, severe heatstroke, dehydration, and a foot injury.

“I’m ecstatic about the amount raised—I initially thought I might raise around N$10,000, but we reached N$66,900. I’m in awe. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Walk with Me fund.”

“Thank you to everyone in Namibia, from the south to the north, who walked with me. Thank you for your love and support. I’m looking forward to seeing a beautiful youth centre in Narraville soon.”

The envisioned Narraville Youth Centre is to be built next to the Narraville Community Hall.

Trevino Forbes, mayor of Walvis Bay, explained that one of the sponsors is an architect.

“We are currently waiting for the plans from the architect and for the quantity surveying to be done. Once this is completed, we will start with the ground breaking. We are very thankful to Ray for raising N$66,900 through her walk. You gave hope to the youth of Walvis Bay and the youth of Namibia.”

A total of N$1.5 million has been budgeted under the youth and sports department of the municipality for this youth centre.

“To our donors and residents, just because you do not see something happening does not mean nothing is happening. Proper planning prevents poor performance. We will build this youth centre with our community, as well as our business community.”

Sasman indicated that the N$66,900 raised should be used by the office of the mayor to purchase reading books for the youth centre.
