Re-elected Eenhana mayor promises land delivery
Plans to bring education ‘closer to the people’
Kavandje and the council are "delighted with the pace at which Eenhana is developing".
Re-elected Eenhana mayor Omri-Onn Kavandje says it is his duty to ensure that residents receive quality service, adding that the town council has commenced with the servicing of about 304 plots for low income earners at Oukango Park, where houses are built under the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia programme.
The area has water, sewerage infrastructure and electricity, he noted.
“It has been our agenda to find strategies that create employment opportunities for young people in our town. One of the strategies is to attract major business such as manufacturing and shopping malls,” he said, further highlighting that the council has allocated land measuring 46 343 square metres at Extension 12 for the construction of a state-of-the-art mall.
Once completed, the mall will not only bring various commodities to town, but it will also create employment, he said.
Education
Meanwhile, the council has engaged institutions of high learning to open centres in Eenhana so that residents no longer have to travel long distances to access education.
In this vein, he said they have allocated 42 hectares of land – at the tune of N$42 million - to the Namibian University of Science and Technology (NUST).
“It also worth reporting that the International University Management [IUM] is constructing its campus in Eenhana. This noble project is visible on the west side of Eenhana circuit. We are delighted with the pace at which Eenhana is developing,” Kavandje said.
Interest relief
Furthermore, the mayor said they have noticed that some clients are struggling to honour their municipal bills fully. To date, residents owe the town council about N$40.2 million.
“Council has introduced an interest relief programme in which council is waiving 100% of interest on municipal bills for our clients - residential, businesses, for profit and non-profit - for the period of 12 months,” Kavandje said.
This programme will kick off in January.
The council elections were presided over by Magistrate Helvi Kauna Shilemba. Kavandje will be deputised by Selma Kawiiwa. Amos Nangolo, Ester Ndapwa Kavela and Leonard Jona remain members of the management committee, with Nangolo re-elected as chairperson. Herman Angula and Fredrick Ndilinawa are ordinary council members.
