Recognition for long-serving volunteer firefighters
Dedicated community servants
The mayor of Walvis Bay handed over certificates of appreciation to volunteer firefighters who have selflessly served as reservists since 1989.
Nineteen volunteer firefighters, who have been serving the community of Walvis Bay as reservists since 1989, received certificates of acknowledgment for their unwavering efforts.
The commendation follows hot on the heels of a recent shift to a 24-hour operational model at the Mautmene Fire Station.
The mayor of Walvis Bay, Trevino Forbes, handed over the certificates and underscored the importance of acknowledging the tireless efforts of the community heroes.
“This gesture carries profound significance. We acknowledge and appreciate your dedication and the service you rendered over the span of more than three decades [34 years].
“You stood ready to protect your community at a moment’s notice and embody the spirit of selflessness and community service. Each certificate encapsulates a legacy of commitment and echoes the collective impact you have had on the safety and well-being of the residents of Walvis Bay.”
Johannes Oberholster, a senior volunteer among the honorees, received a special certificate in recognition of his exemplary service and leadership within the volunteer firefighting team.
Tutaleni Kathindi, the acting chief of the fire services, emphasised that the move signals a departure from relying on volunteers and said this marks a new era for emergency response in Walvis Bay.
“With the station’s transition to a round-the-clock service, the need for volunteers diminishes, aligning with our commitment to enhance emergency services in the community.
“While volunteer firefighters played a crucial role in the past, this shift acknowledges the evolving needs of the community and the importance of a professionalized, round-the-clock service.
“The decision to transition to a 24-hour operational model signifies a significant milestone for the firefighting services and reflects a commitment to enhancing emergency response capabilities and ensuring the continuous safety of the residents of Walvis Bay.”
Kathindi disclosed that the fire station now boasts ten permanent employees, with an additional 15 members recently welcomed into the fold. “This expanded team will work in shifts, ensuring round-the-clock readiness to respond to emergencies and uphold the safety of our residents.”
