Revamped Ondjamba Street now much safer
Safety comes first
A road that had become notorious due to the unsafe conditions that prevailed is now much safer for use after improvements to the road's surface, upgraded traffic signals, enhanced signage, and the implementation of measures to lessen the risk of accidents.
The Swakopmund municipality officially opened the newly upgraded Ondjamba Street in Mondesa.
The cost of phase one of the upgrade amounted to N$6.3 million. According to the municipality, the phased approach was taken to minimise the strain on the council’s budget. Through strategic partnerships with dedicated contractors such as Paul and Lucy Investment, the project’s vision has now materialised with tangible results. Phases two and three of the project are yet to be announced.
The road had become notorious due to the unsafe conditions for pedestrians and motorists that prevailed, and the municipality moved to address the long-standing safety concerns. The renovations include improvements to the road’s surface, upgraded traffic signals, enhanced signage, and the implementation of measures to lessen the risk of accidents.
The unveiling ceremony, attended by officials and residents, marked a significant milestone in the town’s ongoing efforts to enhance the safety and functionality of its infrastructure.
The mayor of Swakopmund, Dina Namubes, emphasised the importance of the structural renovations, stating: “The transition from a gravel road to an interlocked street signifies not only an aesthetic enhancement but also a functional improvement in transportation and connectivity.”
She added that the upgraded street will not only facilitate smoother traffic flow but also “enhance pedestrian safety, thereby fostering a more vibrant and cohesive community.”
Also speaking at the opening ceremony, Swakopmund CEO Alfeus Benjamin recalled frequent reports about accidents on Ondjamba Street, leading to his close involvement in the upgrade.
“I stopped by frequently to ensure effective and diligent work on this project throughout the construction process.”
He added that the project underscores the Swakopmund municipality’s commitment to prioritising safety and accessibility in all aspects of urban planning and development.
“Residents can look forward to safer and more accessible transportation routes, further contributing to the overall habitability of Swakopmund.”
