Hotel and guesthouse porters, receptionists, and waitstaff from seven Swakopmund-based establishments and a private company will compete in various challenges for the Guest Relations Championships title on 2 September.

The contestants will be tested in categories that include their interaction with clients, telephone etiquette, and resolving issues with difficult clients by the members of the judging panel pretending to be guests.

The championships - an extension of the Housekeeping Olympics - will be hosted at the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre in the Spitzkoppe Conference Room.

“Client service and guest relations etiquette are of critical importance for the hospitality industry. This is also just an opportunity to give hotel staff members a chance to showcase their work and passion while having some fun and making everyone aware of the critical role they play in the hospitality industry. It will definitely be something different and interesting,” said Suzi Cilliers, the event organiser.

The competition was initially intended for the hospitality sector but private individuals also showed interest. The Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre, Atlantic Villa Boutique Guesthouse and Conferencing, Atlantic Garden Boutique Hotel, Meike's Guesthouse, Hotel Deutsches Haus, Swakopmund Sands, Driftwood Guesthouse and GreenSprout Tutorial and Training College entered the competition.

The judge's panel will consist of Dr. Rowan van Dyk, head of academics and product development at the Business School of Excellence; Brandt von West, speaker, novelist, and publisher; consultant Rose Minnaar; waitress Queen Basson; and nutritionist Prudence Swartz.

The Deutsches Haus and Beach Hotel team emerged victorious at the first-ever edition of the Housekeeping Olympics hosted in Namibian in February at the MTC Dome in Swakopmund. The winners earned a floating trophy and bragging rights as the establishment with the top housekeeping team. Twelve teams representing hotels and coastal accommodation establishments entered the event.
