Swakop residents fear nuclear fallout
Written objections to be submitted
A resident has started a petition against the establishment of a proposed radioactive material storage bunker in Swakopmund.
Over a thousand people have signed a petition to stop the construction of a radioactive material storage bunker in Swakopmund.
Louise Engelbrecht started the petition signed by 1 877 on 25 February 2024 to raise concerns about the proposed construction of a storage facility for radioactive source material on Erf 3954 in Einstein Street.
“This project poses significant health and environmental risks to our community. We urge the relevant authorities in Swakopmund, Namibia, to stop the building of this facility and prioritise public safety over industrial interests. Please join us in voicing your opposition and objection by signing this petition.” Engelbrecht said.
She added that, according to the World Health Organization, exposure to radioactive materials can lead to serious health issues, including cancer and genetic damage.
“Moreover, accidents involving such materials could have catastrophic consequences for our environment and future generations.”
The municipality of Swakopmund also acknowledged a notice of objection published in the local media by Stewart Planning Town and Regional Planners on behalf of Namaquanum Investments Two.
The company intends to construct an above-ground or underground bunker built according to international safety standards for the storage and handling of hazardous radioactive substances.
According to Namaquanum Investments Two, an existing warehouse will also be used as a handling facility to perform calibration tests for drilling equipment used in the offshore oil exploration industry.
The municipality assured residents that this matter is under careful consideration and said that the objections raised will be thoroughly examined during upcoming council deliberations.
“The municipality of Swakopmund values the engagement and cooperation of its residents in shaping the future of our community. We appreciate your understanding and active participation in this matter. The municipality is committed to a transparent and inclusive process. Residents’ concerns and objections are vital components of this decision-making process, and the municipality encourages community engagement.”
According to the municipality, it is imperative to note that no final decisions have been made as the matter has yet to be discussed.
“It should be noted that this application has not yet been submitted to council for discussion; however, deliberations on this application will take into account the objections and concerns raised by residents.” Council urged residents to participate in the process by submitting their written comments, representations, and objections within the stipulated timeframe. This collaborative approach ensures that community input is integral to the decision-making process.
Written comments, representations, and/or objections must be submitted to the council and Stewart Planning in writing before or on Friday, 8 March 2024 at 17:00.
