WHS boys, Gymnasium girls dominate quarter-finals

Windhoek High School (WHS)’s first boys hockey team secured itself a spot in the semi-finals by defeating Walvis Bay Private School (WBPS) 6-0 in a thrilling NSSU national first league quarter-final match played at Walvis Bay Private School on Saturday.WHS 1 started off strongly, manoeuvring through WBPS’s defence and racing to take a 5-0 lead by halftime. In the third quarter, WBPS applied pressure in a determined effort to trim the score, however, WHS remained alert and clinched a 6-0 win against WBPS 1.WHS’s boys captain Josh Hatton-Jones said his team feels good about advancing in the competition. “The boys worked really hard today. We played as a team and I am happy with the results as well as our performance on the pitch.”He added that they hope to do well in the semi-finals and hopefully advance to the finals.GirlsThe Windhoek Gymnasium first girls team also secured their spot in the semi-finals by defeating hosts WBPS 8-0 in an exciting first league quarter-final. Windhoek Gym’s captain Karin Loftie-Eaton said it was an exciting experience. “It was a fun game. Most of our goals came from short corners – that is an aspect we’ve been practising really hard for.”WBPS’s captain Juane Brand said Windhoek Gymnasium had shown “really good sportsmanship”. “They are so good on the pitch. It was really nice playing against them because of how tough they are and the fact that we’re not used to this type of competition,” Brand said.Full quarter-final results from Stampriet, Walvis Bay, Tsumeb and Affies Park:Girls third league: Moria beat Windhoek Gymnasium III by 2-0.
