Wiltrud Becker, Swakopmund's oldest daughter
A 100 years and counting
Wiltrud Becker (Brock) is celebrated as one of the oldest women alive in Swakopmund. Becker was born 100 years ago in Swakopmund, where she was raised in the house now home to the Ankerplatz Restaurant.
Becker was the eldest daughter of Helene and Wilhelm Brock, who managed Woermann, Brock & Co, one of Namibia’s revolutionary fresh foods store.
She completed most of her education in Swakopmund before finishing her schooling with an Abitur in Germany. In 1943, she married fellow Namibian Hasso Becker, from Farm Chairos in the Outjo district. The couple returned to Namibia in 1949, after the second World War, and took on an interest in farming. Together, Wiltrud and Hasso Becker, established one of Namibia's first guest and hunting farms.
The Beckers had six children of which five were sons and one daughter, Wolfram, Walter, Joachim, Reinhard, and Andreas and daughter, Inga Isabel.
After a successful farming career, the Beckers retired to Swakopmund in the 1980s.
Throughout her life, Wiltrud Becker maintained a profound passion for writing. She documented her experiences in detail, published numerous short stories, and wrote captivating stories for her grandchildren. Her literary contributions remain a cherished legacy.
Becker is also a grandmother of 12 and the great-grandmother of eight. Currently residing in the frail care unit at Antonius Old Age Home in Swakopmund, she has celebrated her 100th birthday on 15 September 2024, marking her as one of Namibia's oldest living residents.
