The launch of the 16th edition of the FNB Classic Clashes took place yesterday in Windhoek.

As one of the most sought-after sporting events at high schools, which includes multiple sport codes, the FNB Namibia Classic Clashes has, since its inception in 2008, grown from only two clashes to over 22 clashes countywide, enabling 44 schools from around the country to participate this year.

FNB Namibia's executive of retail banking, Nangula Kauluma, said: "We are especially delighted to announce that we have added the towns of Opuwo and Rundu to the schedule, thus extending our footprint from 9 to 11, out of the 14 regions in Namibia."

She added: "This is yet another indication of FNB’s commitment to not only help develop our young Namibian women but also to give them the opportunity to achieve both individual and team successes."

Grassroots to greatness

The launch was attended by sports minister Agnes Tjongarero, who said: "This year’s theme of 'Grassroots to Greatness' speaks volumes. Starting off with how the classic clashes began at the grassroots, with just seven teams, and has continued to grow and flourish to greatness, with now 44 teams in 11 regions."

The first Classic Clashes games will kick off on 28 July in Keetmanshoop, with the final games taking place in Okatana on 20 September
