A 16-year-old para archer, Katelynn Venter intends to hit the “bullseye” for a good cause.

Katelyn aims to raise funds for the Lions Club of Walvis Bay by shooting on a target during a charity event. The funds generated will be used to purchase wheelchairs and donate these to any person in need free of charge. Community members can become part of this event by sponsoring every yellow scoring arrow that Katelynn manages to land in the nine and ten scoring circles.

How it works

Katelynn who is an archer and member of Swakopmund Archery Club for the past three years will shoot a total of 72 arrows from a distance of 30 meters on 7 May at the SFC Sport Club in Swakopmund.

Sponsors can donate an amount for every arrow that Katelynn manages to land in the yellow scoring circle.

“For instance, if she shoots 30 arrows out of the 72 in the yellow circle and someone sponsors N$10 an arrow, the calculation will be as follow 30 x N$10 = N$300. The sponsors will be informed straight after the event of how many arrows she landed.”

Marius Venter, Katelynn’s dad explained. There is also an option that allows persons to donate a once-off amount irrespective of the scoring arrows landed by Katelynn. All donations must be paid directly into the Lions account.

Huge heart

Katelynn has carried out other similar initiatives in the past.

“At the age of nine, she learned that there are children at the cancer ward who needed personal necessities and decided to make care packages for them. She initially gave ten parcels containing toothpaste, a toothbrush, sweets and some toys purchased with her pocket money and some savings she had. She then arranged a colouring competition at her local school to generate funds for more packages,” her dad said.

Katelynn also sponsored two wheelchairs to the Lions Club. One of the wheelchairs was donated to a paralysed boy who had to be carried by his classmates from one classroom to the next.

Over the years the Venter family received numerous requests, especially from parents with disabled children, for assistance with chairs. Katelynn was in the privileged position to donate six chairs thus far.

“We all need to pay it forward from time to time and spread the love Jesus bless us with,” she said.
