Athletes to be paid soon
Sports rewards policy lives up to its promise
Namibia's top international athletes will receive money from the sports rewards fund in honour of their achievements, according to NSC's Freddy Mwiya.
The Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) chief administrator, Freddy Mwiya, has confirmed that top sports performers will be financially compensated from the sports rewards fund for their international sporting accomplishments.
The payouts are provided for by the sports ministry through the NSC, he said.
Mwiya said his office has made submissions to government to settle outstanding payments to athletes for their winning international exploits.
'Very soon'
Mwiya was responding to Namibian Sun’s enquiries about the effectiveness of the reward policy and whether government has kept its promise to reward those who excel and win medals at international competitions.
Mwiya confirmed that the only athletes they currently owe are those who recently returned from their exploits in Paris, namely Ananias Shikongo, Johannes Nambala, and Lahja Ishitile. These athletes, respectively, scooped three silver medals.
Mwiya added that athletes who won medals at last year’s Commonwealth Games, including Christine Mboma, Helalia Johannes, para-athlete Shikongo, and cyclist Alex Miller, as well as those who bagged medals at the African Beach Games, including Namibian long-distance swimmer Phillip Seidler and karateka Suzelle Pronk, and the Special Olympic Games, will also receive their financial rewards very soon.
