Bucks Buccaneers gun for ‘own’ history

Newly-formed Bucks Buccaneers aim to write their own history in Namibia by surviving relegation in their Debmarine Namibia Premiership season, team manager Michael Pienaar says.
The club, originally formed by members of relegated Orlando Pirates, has acquired the status of Civics to take its position in the premier league.
Under the sole ownership of Charles !Naruseb, the Bucks Buccaneers appears nothing like the former league team Orlando Pirates that got relegated to the first division last season.
A remaining link between the two sides is their similar dress code and some players that used to represent the former Katutura giants.
Initial discussions to have Orlando Pirates buy out the status of Civics did not materialise, after the former club’s hierarchy chose to settle for playing in the first division following their relegation.
This prompted !Naruseb to proceed with the plan of buying the status of Civics.
Team manager Michael Pienaar admits that Bucks Buccaneers has to build a fan base given that most supporters remain loyal to the relegated Orlando Pirates.
“This is a new team that has plans to create its own history, while building a new fan base.
“We initially thought that the fan base of the old Orlando Pirates would agree with us and move forward with us, but that changed after some leadership in that club decided they want the name back and that is why we named the club Bucks Buccaneers,” Pienaar said.
After eight premiership matches so far, the team is currently placed 13th on the table.
The team has recorded one win, four draws and three losses in their debut season and is just one place above the drop zone.
“Our aim right now is to finish in the top ten of the premiership , which will be an important thing for us,” Pienaar said.
The club has acquired players from different teams and countries in their quest to build a name for themselves.
Their office and club house for the accommodation of players is situated in Windhoek West.
