Chess ace Beukes goes out in style at Chess World Cup
Top Namibian chess player, International Master (IM) Dante Beukes, represented the country in the highly prestigious FIDE World Cup (10th edition) in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 29 to 31 July.
His manager, Berdian Beukes, said that the 2180-rated Namibian IM was paired against seasoned Croatian Chess Grandmaster (GM) and former 2700-rated club member, Ivan Saric, with a FIDE rating of 2657, in the two-game match. Beukes unfortunately lost the eight-round knock-out tournament.
His first game ended in a draw after what seemed to be immense time pressure in a winning position. "An excellent debut game at the 2023 World Cup that was called the biggest upset in round 1 by ChessBase India on their Facebook page."
Beukes went for a second match and needed at least a draw to force the game into tiebreaks or a win to progress in this tournament.
Unfortunately, the experienced GM outmanoeuvred Beukes, and he succumbed to the onslaught and lost the game.
"I am super proud of Beukes. Taking half a point against the experienced GM is no small feat, even more so when he got into a winning position."
