Coetzee wins Munga
Namibian mountain-biker Drikus Coetzee won the Munga Tankwa Grit 500 km MTB event in a time of 22:17 minutes on Saturday in very cold weather in the Western Cape near Ceres.
The Munga is a single-stage mountain bike race through the Tankwa reserve in the Karoo which is set to be completed in 50 hours.
“I broke away from the pack 30 km into the race and put in a huge effort by myself against strong winds and freezing conditions to win,” a tired Coetzee said.
The Munga was launched way back in 2014, and has become an ultra-endurance mountain bike race in South Africa, and the benchmark by which all other long races are measured. It’s also a bucket list race for anyone who has ever been on a mountain bike.
