Johannes conquers Spar Marathon
Namibian long-distance runner Helalia Johannes stormed to a SPAR Women's 10km race win at the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) in Gqeberha on Saturday, clocking a time of 31:53.
Tadu Nare of Ethiopia settled for second place clocking 32:11 while another Ethiopian, Selan Gebre, secured third place in a time of 32:23.
Johannes, who has won bigger races in the past over longer distances, said she was not surprised by her victory.
The 41-year-old veteran, who dominated the event in the past before Covid-19 hit, pocketed N$30 000 for her efforts this time around.
“I am not even surprised by the victory given that I was well prepared for it. This was a good victory for me and for Namibia and I was just happy to be back at this event again.
“I would like to thank all those that have supported me, including my coach,” Johannes said.
