Mako hooks Coastal Angling League and first competition for 2024
Top class angling
A social competition that was started in the mid 1980's with all coastal angling clubs involved, signaled the start of the latest edition of the Coastal Angling League.
The first Coastal Angling League competition for 2024 took place on Saturday. This is a social competition that was started in the mid 1980’s with all coastal angling clubs involved. One hundred and twenty anglers from10 clubs including Atlantic, Benguela, Henties Bay Namib Park, Orca, Seagulls, Steenbras Walvis Bay and Welwitschia were in action in the women, men, U/16 and U/21 categories. The area of fishing was between Mile 8 and Mile 13.
According to Jacomien Heath, records officer for the West Coast Angling league, conditions were not very favourable for angling and not a lot of fish were reeled in by the participating anglers.
“The competitors had to scratch hard in the absence of any sharks or edibles. A few kabeljou, spotties, blue rays, eagle rays and one bronzy were eventually caught as the competition progressed. These species were also the most common fish caught.”
The Mako Angling Club anglers gave a good account of themselves and won the competition with a total catch weight of 117 kg. Welwitschia followed in the second position with a weight of 59.8 kg and Walvis Way in third position with 36.8 kg.
Rinus van der Westhuizen was the top performing angler amongst the men with a total catch weight of 73.3 kg. Carlien Steyn won the ladies division with a total catch weight of 4.8 kg. Philip Swart was the best U/16 angler with a total catch weight of 11.5 kg and Tiaan Boorman the best U/21 angler with a total catch weight of 6.1 kg.
Carlien Steyn caught the heaviest shark (2.4 kg), Johan van Niekerk the heaviest cob (1.4 kg), while Rinus van der Westhuizen was the winner in the edible category (64.0 kg). Sponsorship from Leon’s Tackle Shop, RS Cooling Swakopmund, Southern Cross Roofing, Benguella Insurance Brokers and Fish Reaper Henties Bay made the event possible.
League champs crowned
The prize giving for the 2023 edition of the West Coastal Angling League was also held at the Mile 8 parking area.
Mako emerged as the champions of the 2023 edition of the league. Mako and Walvis Bay Angling Club finished level on the overall team log with 248 points each based on the best points accumulated from five of six competitions for the year.
The Mako anglers however landed the most kilograms 1980.79 kg based on the best of five from six competitions for the year followed by Walvis Bay with 1432.51 kg in second position. Mako was thus declared the Coastal Angling League champions.
Lance Mills of Namib Park landed the heaviest fish a 2.13 m copper shark (male) with a weight of 130.50 kg for 2023. Rinus Swartz (Jnr) was the best U/16 angler. He collected 250 league points and registered a weight of 250 kg. Mark Van der Merwe was the best Junior U/20 angler. He collected 239 points and registered a weight of 102 kg.
Renate Gruttenmeyer was crowned as the ladies champion of the league. She amassed 241 points and registered a weight of 48 kg. Martin Cordier pocketed the League Champion title. He collected 491 points and registered a weight of 347 kg. Johan Visser weighed in the most kilograms at 421 kg and also the heaviest bag at 318 kg. Martin Cordier caught the most number of fish (27).
The next Coastal Angling League competition will take place at Mile 30 on 9 March. This will be followed by competitions at Mile 14 on 6 April, Jakkalsputz on 24 September, Bennie se rooi lorrie on 26 October and Mile 8 on 24 November.
