Namibian volleyball returns to international stage

Mariud Ngula
The Namibia Volleyball Federation (NVF) today announced the participation of the NDF A (men) and NAVY (women) teams in the upcoming Zone VI Club Championship. The two clubs will leave on 5 December to represent the country in Maseru, Lesotho, from 7 to 17 December. They are set to battle it out with close to 20 teams from Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

NVF president Hillary Dux Imbuwa said the club championships serve as a platform for teams from across the region to exhibit their prowess and compete at an elite level. He indicated that this will be the country’s first competition on an international platform since their previous participation in 2018, in Durban, South Africa.

“This exemplifies the spirit of sportsmanship and the commitment to excellence that define the key objective of Namibian volleyball,” said Imbuwa.

Well-deserved honour

He added that the two teams displayed great performances during the recently concluded Bank Windhoek NVF Cup. Their dedication and hard work, he said, have rightfully earned them the honour of representing Namibia at the prestigious championship.

Imbuwa expressed his gratitude to the leadership of the Namibian Defence Force for their unwavering support and commitment to the development of volleyball in Namibia. He said their generous provision of funds will contribute significantly to the growth and promotion of volleyball within the country.

Reigning champions not participating

He expressed disappointment that both the Khomas NamPol teams, who are the reigning Namibian champions, will not be travelling to Lesotho.

“This is not the first time that the Namibian Police Force has been crowned the Namibian champion and failed to represent the country. We have written a letter to the Inspector-General’s office highlighting the momentousness of this event. We also followed up with another letter a week ago, but we never received any response until the closing date.”
