The town council of Usakos (UTC) recently visited Erf 260, where its sports field is situated and is currently under construction.

“We are pleased to see significant progress and improvements in the upgrading of our sports field. Soon we will have a gated sports field for safety.”

Phase 1 has kicked off and will focus on replacing the old fence with a new diamond wire mesh, the old poles with new treated poles, and performing major renovation work in the change rooms. The scope of the renovations includes repairing structural damage, upgrading seating facilities, improving amenities such as restroom facilities and concessions, and enhancing overall safety measures.

Usakos mayor, Irene Simeon-Kurtz, added that the project commenced in the first week of March and that the government appointed a company called the Association for Unemployed Artisans in Namibia (AUAN).

“The project created at least 30 temporary jobs, which is of great benefit to Usakos and helps with the high unemployment in town.”

The ministry of youth and sports has allocated N$2 million during the 2022/23 financial year to upgrade and renovate the sports stadium to meet the requirements for hosting sports activities and soccer matches.

The co-owner of Usakos Football Academy, Mohalle Naruseb, says this renovation is long overdue but still excites him and various other Usakos residents.

“We make frequent use of the stadium for our daily practices and workout routines despite the conditions. The team, however, is unable to host official matches at the stadium due to the standard of the facility and often plays official matches in the neighbouring town, Karibib.”

According to Naruseb, there has been a significant decline in the interest of sports within the town, and he hopes that the current ongoing renovations will uplift the spirits of the residents.

“Hopefully the renovations will ignite interest in Usakos, and the support for the local team will grow,” Naruseb said.

With renewed infrastructure and enhanced amenities, the stadium is poised to reclaim its status as a vibrant hub of activity and a source of pride for generations to come.
