The Dunes final trail run of the Winter Series
Xtrail series
The final event in the Standard Bank Winter Xtrail Series – The Dunes – will take place at Swakopmund this Saturday.
The event attracts both competitive and social participants, walkers and runners.
As per the other events in the series, participants can choose between an 8 km or 16 km distance.
The start and finish will be at Tigers Reef Beach Bar. The race starts off along the beach which is also the mouth of the Swakop River. From there participants head into the Swakopmund Recreational Dune Belt, and into the Dorob National Park.
The first race starts at 08:30. The organising team at OTB Sport points out that the unique run will take participants into the dunes of the Dorob National Park. The Ministry of Environment together with tour operators working in the area have worked hard to rehabilitate this delicate environment.
Yvonne Brinkmann, race organiser at OTB Sport, said: “It is important that the runners and walkers stay on the designated routes and marked trails. The dunes are alive with life and anyone running off the tracks can ruin the delicate ecosystem and the pristine landscape. Although one thinks of the dunes as pure sand, much of the running is on the flat and hard surface at the base of the dunes, although there will also be some dune scrambles.”
Runners compete not only for the podium for the Dunes Xtrail, but also for overall series positions in the Standard Bank Xtrail series.
OTB Sport expressed its thanks to Standard Bank for its generous sponsorship of the Winter Trail Series.
“This is the seventh consecutive year that Standard Bank has sponsored the series and they have been a material component in growing trail running in Namibia,” said Brinkmann.
