U19 title holders still the team to beat

Wins for Windhoek Gymnasium, Walvis Bay Private School and Pro-Ed advanced their cause.
The Standard Bank Namibia Secondary School Rugby (NSSR) Under 19 Super League continued with some mouth-watering fixtures.
On Friday evening, defending champions Schoemans Group Windhoek Gymnasium Lions proved too tough for Autohaus Windhoek Afrikaans Private School as they won 39-13.
Affies, beaten finalists in 2022, committed a lot of errors in their backline which was punished by Gymnasium exerting pressure in a structured way.
Gymnasium’s Suramie Kambombo, playing at outside centre, scored a hat-trick, while nr. 8 Ruan Agenbag, scrum-half Denver Beukes and Stephan Gildenhuys (captain and inside centre) rounded off more five-pointers. Waldré Kotze (fly-half) added three conversions.
Affies was only able to reply with one try by flank Walther Otto, a result of pick-and-go play by their hardworking forward pack, along with the conversion and two penalties by impressive fly-half Van der Merwe Tromp.
Kambombo said: “It was a tough game, but the boys really showed up. My performance was really a team effort, so I am grateful we got the win.”
Walvis Bay survives
Samsung Windhoek High School travelled to the coast to take on PSG Walvis Bay Private School (WBPS) and although they came off second-best 26-24, the bonus points for having scored four tries to three, as well as losing narrowly meant WHS added six log points to Walvis’ seven.
Nikanor Nangolo reports that the teams were level at 14-14 at halftime. Afterwards WBPS captain Michael Koopman said: “WHS put on a decent performance and I’m glad that we got the win. Now we just have to work on the critical areas, because I think that is how WHS got through.”
Koopman (fly-half) excelled with 16 points, which included a try, while scrum-half and national schools team-mate J.D. Rossouw scored two tries.
WHS’s four tries were scored by Zander Peters (2), wing Jurgen Meyer and full-back Aljeandro Morkel. Two conversions were landed by fly-half Caeden Moller.
• Visitors PSG Pro-Ed stormed past OK Foods Moria 40-0 at Outjo, with prop Devon Burger scoring a remarkable four tries.
Centre Tayton Saunders and wing Marc Holloway also scored tries, while fly-half Maghaun Jarman added ten kicking points.
Pro-Ed coach Thys Saunders: “It wasn’t that easy. We were often penalised in the first half and lost some of our lineout throws which put ourselves under pressure, but our first outing after the holidays actually went well.
“Our scrum was solid and the backline looked good in attack. Still, we had a lot of possession, but did not always use it properly. Overall I am proud of our work in the second half.”

WPBS is on top of the Super League with 19 points from three matches, one ahead of Windhoek Gymnasium who has played only twice. Tsumeb Gymnasium is third and WHS fourth as the league starts to heat up.
