African Stars have title race sewn up
Football
The champions' remaining match against Orlando Pirates have become all but a mathematical formality.
African Stars captain Ronald Ketjijere remains adamant that his team will secure its second consecutive Debmarine Namibia Premier Football League title next weekend, as the chasing pack will now be required to score too many goals while hoping that Stars lose by a big margin to turn things around.
Reigning title holders Stars and Ongos FC played to a 0-0 stalemate yesterday afternoon at the Independence Stadium in the second last match of the season.
“The boys showed some good courage today and fought well. I do not think it was a bad result for us, because either a win or draw would have counted in our favour.
“It will be impossible for Ongos to score more than 10 goals next weekend and for us to also lose by a big margin against Orlando Pirates,” Ketjijere said.
The match produced clear-cut chances, mainly for Ongos, but they could not make Stars pay.
Ongos coach Efraim Tjihonge is almost certain that his team’s league-winning chance have now disappeared.
“I must applaud the boys for putting in a shift today and doing their best.
“I however believe that it will be tough to pip Stars at the post now.
“We have fought hard all season and I am proud of our overall performance,” Tjihonge said.
Yesterday’s result meant Stars finish the weekend on 61 log points, while Ongos FC managed 58.
