A highly exciting day could be on offer for Namibian fans who will be expectant of victories for both the national men’s and women’s teams in today’s encounters at the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup in the Croatian coastal town Porec.

At 10:30 in the first match of today’s program, captain DJ Strauss’ Namibian men will be determined to enforce their higher ranking on Trinidad & Tobago, as both look to rebound from losses on the opening day.

Strauss’ team was rated 14th in the world before this tournament, and the islanders 17th. On Monday, the Namibians were punished for some inaccuracy in the late stages of their opener against Belgium (world ranking 3rd) and conceded the 4-4 scoreline to lose 4-7.

However, the Namibians showed potency with goals by John-Paul Britz (tw0), Dakota Hansen and Liam Hermanus and have their target set on reaching the quarter-finals like they did at the previous Indoor World Cup in South Africa two years ago.

Women’s showdown

At 13:10 today, all eyes will be on the Namibian women as they look to inflict further pain on New Zealand and set up a potential firecracker Group C decider against Germany on Thursday night.

Gillian Hermanus led the African title holders to a famous and historic 3-2 upset win against Australia two days ago, with Taramarie Myburgh celebrating her first Indoor World Cup outing with two goals, before Jivanka Kruger broke the 2-2 deadlock with a sharp field goal in the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, New Zealand went down heavily in their opener against Germany (9-1)

The pool’s world rankings: Australia 5th, Germany 6th, Namibia 12th, New Zeland 15th.
