Chula Chula wins Dr Hage Geingob Cup
Electrifying matches end successfully
At a full to the rafters Independence Stadium, visiting Eeshoke Chula Chula broke the heart of African Stars fans by scoring the only goal of the match to lift the cup.
In the ninth edition of the Dr Hage Geingob Cup played at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek on Saturday afternoon, Eeshoke Chula Chula beat African Stars 1-0 – much to the satisfaction of their legion of travelling fans.
Their goal came in the 40th minute through George Marselinu. Moses Shidolo hit the pole, the ball bounced back only for Marselinu to make the difference by slotting the ball into the net.
Chula Chula walked away with N$250 000 for this result, while their performance continues to enhance the reputation of the Helao Nafidi club from the Ohangwena region that has made an impact in their first season in the Namibian top flight.
As the runners-up, defending Debmarine NPL champions African Stars took home N$100 000.
South African Legends winners
In the highly anticipated main curtain-raiser between the Namibian and South African football legends, the match ended 1-all.
The star-studded former greats, including many who formerly played for the most well-known clubs in South Africa, Africa and Europe, put on a spectacular performance to entertain the crowd.
The Namibian Legends, however, squandered an initial lead to lose 5-4 in the penalty shootout.
The President of Namibia and patron of the cup event, Dr Hage Geingob, who was in attendance with first lady Monica Geingos, congratulated the visiting team.
“Congratulations South African Legends on your victory against the Namibian Legends. Thank you Doctor Khumalo, Lucas Radebe and the rest of your team for coming to celebrate the Dr Hage Geingob Cup with Namibians,” read Geingob’s Facebook page.
Siphiwe Tshabalala, considered to be one of the most well-known and decorated South African footballers of his generation and always remebered for his stunning goal against Mexico in the opening match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, was among the vising Legends and stated that he was on his fourth visit to the country.
“It was a great afternoon. I give credit to both teams and the supporters who filled the stadium and the rest of the people of Namibia for this great and warm welcome.
“I will definitely be coming back. Namibia is home and we are all Africans,” he said.
The Legends will be paid an appearance fee.
Gals and Goals dominate
In a curtain raiser between leading ladies teams in the FNB Women’s Super League, it was Gals and Goals who spoiled winnings for Ongos Ladies by winning the match 1-0.
The winners bagged N$100 000, whereas Ongos received N$50 000.
