Central Volleyball Association’s (CVA) League will return for its new season tomorrow, with the first round to be held at Windhoek’s University of Namibia (Unam) Gym Hall.

Last year’s season was won by NamPower in the men’s division and Namibia Defence Force (NDF) Phoenixes in the women’s division. The latter has since advanced to the MTC Volleyball National League (VNL).

Despite being the men’s winners, NamPower could not advance to the national league, as they lost their final match at the Namibian Volleyball Federation (NVF) Cup last year.

The NVF Cup serves as the VNL qualifier, where the top two men’s and women’s teams across all NVF leagues face off to determine which teams secure spots in the national league.

Other teams who made the top-two cut, finishing as winners and runners-up and advancing to the VNL, are Afrocat C (men’s division) and Unam Queens (women’s division).

The CVA League will feature a total of 19 teams - eight in the women’s division and 11 in the men’s.

Opening fixtures

Saturday’s league opener will showcase six matches across both divisions, scheduled to run from 09:00 until 19:00.

The first match will be a women’s fixture, with Unam Queens B taking on league debutants Namibia Defence Force, a new team formed after NDF Phoenixes were promoted to the NVL.

The men’s matches will follow, starting with Unam Kings D facing the Namibia University of Science and Technology (Nust) Falcons at 11:00. Nust Blazers will clash with debutants Training Establishment (TEVC) at 13:00, followed by a women’s match between Revivals and NUST at 15:00.

At 17:00, Kudos will take on NDF Hurricanes in a men’s fixture, before defending champions NamPower face City of Windhoek in the final match of the day at 19:00.

Speaking to Sport Wrap, CVA League chairperson Veronica Sampapi said it will be an exciting season. “Most teams are fighting to be at the top so they can be promoted to the VNL. Regardless of three teams from the association being promoted, more teams were created,” she said.

Sampapi further added: “We had five new additions. Afrocat fielded two new development teams - Afrocat E in the men’s division and Afrocat Titans in the women’s.

A new club, TEVC, registered and Unam Queens created a regional team, Unam Queens B, after its former squad was promoted to the national league. The new NDF women’s team is also a regional side.”
