Defending champions dominate MTC VNL first round

In both the men's and women's competition, the reigning title holders claimed back-to-back victories.

The MTC Volleyball National League saw the defending champions make a dominant start, with back-to-back wins for the Revivals women’s and Namibian Correctional Service men’s sides in the first round of the season.

The Namibian Volleyball Federation’s (NVF) two-day event took place on Saturday and Sunday at the Windhoek Showgrounds.

In the women’s division, title holders Revivals Volleyball Club started their campaign with a commanding three sets to zero victory over Kudos Sports Club on Saturday. They later faced a tougher challenge against Ball Busters, but managed to win by three sets to two in their final match of the day.

Newly promoted Namibia Defence Force Phoenixes made a strong first impression on Saturday by securing a three sets to zero win over Nampol Otjozondjupa. They continued their good form on Sunday by beating Nampol Volleyball in a tightly contested match that ended three sets to two in their favour.

Another newly promoted team, Unam Queens, had an excellent start, defeating Ball Busters by 3-0 on Saturday. They continued their momentum into Sunday with a three sets to one victory over Kudos.

In another Saturday fixture, Nampol Otjozondjupa lost to Kudos by one set to three.

Sunday’s first game saw Nampol Otjozondjupa taking on Six Stars. Six Stars emerged victorious with a three sets to one win, but later suffered a 1-3 defeat against Nampol Volleyball.

The teams relegated from last season were Namibian Navy and Beaufort.



Men’s section results

In the men’s division, defending champions Namibian Correctional Service (NCS) began their campaign with a solid three sets to one victory over Keetmanshoop Correctional Facility on Saturday.

NCS followed up their momentum with a dominant 3-0 victory against Unam Hard Hitters later that day.

Newly promoted Mighty Gunners had a tough start to their season, suffering a 3-0 loss against Nampol Volleyball, formerly known as Khomas Nampol. Their struggles continued with a 1-3 defeat at the hands of Calvary Eagles.

Another new entrant in the league, Afrocat started off with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Unam Hard Hitters but later fell to NDF Raptors by the same three sets to two margin.

Other Saturday matches saw NDF Raptors defeating Calvary Eagles by 3-1. Nampol Volleyball secured a 3-0 victory over Keetmanshoop Correctional Facility.

Sunday’s matches saw Keetmanshoop Correctional Facility clinch a narrow three sets to two victory against Calvary Eagles.

The teams relegated from last season were Otjozondjupa Nampol and Coastal Warriors.

Speaking to Sport Wrap, league coordinator Albert Khevare described the first round as explosive. “The new teams had to go through highly competitive matches to earn promotion. They came prepared to challenge the top teams. We are expecting an exciting league this season.”
