June weather hampers Olympic hopefuls

Olympic finalists Beatrice Masilingi and Christine Mboma took each other on in the 200.
Athletics Namibia’s senior Khomas championship was held in unfavourably chilly and windy conditions at the Independence Stadium in the capital on Saturday.
Beatrice Masilingi took part in her first official athletics meeting after a long absence. World Athletics had cleared Masilingi earlier this month to participate in the 100 and 200 metre sprints.
She went went head to head with fellow 2021 Olympic finalist Christine Mboma in the 200, along with Jade Nangula in the second and final heat.
In the 100 Mboma took the honours in 11.80 seconds, with Nangula second in 11.84, while Johanna Ludgerus ended third in 11.90.
The women’s 200 was a grinder with Masilingi leading the way up to 20 metres from the finish line before Mboma pipped her by a hair’s width. Masilingi had an excellent outing in her first race and her form looked very promising.
Mboma won in 23.45, followed by Masilingi (23.46) and Nangula (24.14).
Olympic hopeful David Dam won the 800 in a slow time of 1 minute 51.48 seconds, just ahead of Mathew Angula (1:51.74).
Karlien Botha participated in the shotput for fun, while Coenraad Kuhn reached 16.62 m for first place.
